Regenerative Urbanism is the outcome of Urban Design Master Program students and studio critics in Middle East Technical University. The book focuses on the Cappadocia region, which is a unique natural and cultural heritage setting in Turkey. First, the book defines the design approach of the urban design studio program, introduces the spatial, geographical, cultural and heritage context of Cappadocia. Then, it introduces urban coding as the fundamental goal of each design project. The book includes five urban design projects focusing on three different settlements in Cappadocia, i.e. Uçhisar, Göreme and Avanos. Each design project, focusing and elaborating on a design topic or agent within the local context, defines potentials and problems, needs and values. Based on the context of ‘regenerative urbanism’, each urban design project aims to show how to generate liveable, creative, adaptive and transitive places in these settlements and create connective places where people feel connected with themselves, others, nature, locales, the sacred, the past and the future. The projects also seek to envision and show the best possibilities by spatial design configurations, mapping, 3-D modelling and simulations and design codes.
